Dan Harrington has been a Massachusetts state chess champion, a
backgammon World Cup winner, and a bankruptcy attorney. Now he's a
Santa Monica, California-based real estate investor who has earned the
respect of fellow poker players worldwide due to his solid and disarming style
of play and his impressive showings in major tournaments.
Harrington may be one of the sport's best bluffers. His nickname "Action Dan"
seems contradictory given his dignified, quiet, and stately demeanor at the
table. In fact,he says he gave himself that moniker to throw his opponents
off his game!
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dan’s poker career began in the poker
rooms of NYC playing with some of the game’s best players. In 1987,
Harrington entered his first World Series of Poker championship and placed
an impressive sixth. Two years later, he moved to California. In 1995, he won
the World Series, and has since made it to the final tables of two back-to-
back WSOP main events: placing third in 2003 and fourth in 2004.
While he does not consider himself a poker professional, he credits watching
the WPT’s 1st season with getting him back into the game. Watching players
of his caliber see success, Dan felt it was perhaps time to get back into the
game, seeing immediate success in the WSOP and delayed success on the
WPT. Harrington has posted three money finishes in World Poker Tour
tournaments, one in the Season Two Bellagio championship, and two in
Season Three at the LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino and the World
Poker Challenge in Reno.
Dan is the co-author of “Harrington on Hold-Em: Expert Strategy for No-Limit
Tournaments” and “Harrington on Hold-Em: Endgame”, he plans on using all
of this collected wisdom as he plays his first WPT final table. Should Dan win
the Doyle Brunson North American Championship, he would be the first WSOP
Main Event winner to also win a WPT Title.
