Tournament Report
Mike Simon Wins World Poker Challenge
March 30, 2006
The final table of the World Poker Challenge at the Reno Hilton looked to be a
battle. The six players entering play all had enough chips to put themselves
in a great position to take the title and the $1,052,890 that went to the
winner. Little did anyone know how much of a battle it would turn out to be.
If there was a favorite at the beginning of the day, it was clearly poker
professional Barry Greenstein. Greenstein entered the final table second in
chips and with more final-table experience than the rest of the table
combined. The day did not play out as expected for Greenstein. On only the
fourth hand of the day, Mike Simon doubled through Greenstein when both
players flopped trip eights and Simon had an ace kicker. The hand left
Greenstein crippled and he was eliminated in sixth place only five hands later.
Barry Greenstein earned $85,370 for his play.
Jonas Norrman qualified on a $6.40 satellite and parlayed that into a seat at
the final table. However, his dream came to an end on the 94th hand of the
day when Jason Stern made two pair on the river to beat Norrman’s pair of
queens. Jonas Norrman was eliminated in fifth place and earned $113,830.
Only seven hands later, Greg “FBT” Mueller got all of his money in with A-8
against the K-Q of Mike Simon. Simon was able to catch two pair against
Mueller and knocked the former professional hockey player out in fourth
place. Greg Mueller took home $142,285 for his performance.
The action was picking up at a furious pace. Just moments after Mueller was
sent home, Tom Schneider moved all in on Jason Stern’s big blind with K-3.
Stern made the call with A-2 and was able to make a wheel to eliminate
Schneider in third place. For his effort, Tom Schneider pocketed $256,115.
That left a heads-up battle between Mike Simon and Jason Stern. With the
high blinds, the battle was not expected to last long. However, it took 50
hands to determine a winner. The two battled back and forth, trading chips
and bad beats. In the end, it was Mike Simon who was able to battle his way
to the top. Jason Stern finished in second place and earned $529,300 for his
excellent play.
Mike Simon entered the day as the slight chip leader. Despite that, it did not
seem like many people were giving him much of a chance to take down the
title. However, after more than 10 hours of grueling play, Simon was able to
prove the doubters wrong and capture the title at the World Poker Challenge.
For his victory, Mike Simon not only earned the $1,052,890 prize for first place
and the $25,000 entry into the World Poker Tour Championship at the
Bellagio next month, but he also earned the respect of players and fans alike.
