Tournament Report
The Grinder Captures a Victory at the Borgata
February 1, 2006
Not very often does a final table come along that generates as much
excitement as the one for the 2006 Borgata Winter Poker Open today did.
This table was stacked from top to bottom with great players who survived a
field of 381 entrants. However, everyone had their eye on one player,
Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. He final tabled the Gold Strike WPT event in
Tunica just over a week ago and was looking to improve on his second place
finish.
The day started well for Mizrachi, as he was picking up pots left and right.
Then, he knocked Stu “The Donator” Paterson out in sixth place and it looked
like he might turn into a one man wrecking crew. That began to change when
John D’Agostino picked up some momentum.
To say that John D’Agostino went on a rush would be an understatement.
“Dags” single handedly knocked out Josh Spiegelman in fifth place, Amnon
Filippi in fourth place and Erick Lindgren, our beginning of the day chip leader,
in third place. Those eliminations led to a heads up match between two of
the best young poker players in the business.
Michael Mizrachi entered heads up play with a chip lead of less than half a
million chips. However, “The Grinder” won a pot of over $1.5 million on only
the second hand against D’Agostino. After that, Mizrachi played patiently but
kept applying pressure to the shorter stack of D’Agostino. Finally, D’Agostino
moved all in on a semi bluff and was called by Mizrachi with two pair. “Dags”
missed his gutshot straight on the river and finished the tournament in
second place for $591,312.
With the victory, “The Grinder” picks up $1,173,373, a $25,000 entry into the
WPT Championship and a new 2006 Cadillac Escalade. This was Mizrachi’s
second victory on the World Poker Tour. Now, he is off to defend his title at
the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles.
Is it possible that “The Grinder” can final table three World Poker Tour events
in a row? If anyone can do it, it is Michael Mizrachi. After all, he is a
machine.
